Ryan McAidoo made his first two senior appearances for Manchester City last season, scoring his first goal in a 10-1 FA Cup win over Exeter City. The 17-year-old winger has since become a name fans whisper about in the stands. But with City chasing a winger this summer, the question is simple: is McAidoo ready to step up?

What McAidoo brings to the pitch

McAidoo has the raw tools to become an elite winger. He is a superb dribbler, quick and direct, and he can beat a man to tear apart a defence. In City's academy system and in his two first-team outings, he has shown a knack for getting into dangerous positions in the final third. That threat going forward makes him a tantalising prospect.

But there is more to the game. McAidoo has an eye for goal and an assist, but both need improvement. That will come with time. What is already clear is that his apprenticeship in City's academy means he understands how the team plays in and out of possession. He has the makings of a Manchester City player.

The question of readiness

McAidoo is only 17. He is an elite young player with the potential to develop into something special. What seems certain is that he is ready to play at a higher level than the Elite Development Side. The question is whether that next step is a role in the first team or a loan move.

Divine Mukasa spent the second half of the 2025-26 season on loan at Leicester City. Mukasa was further along in his development when he went out on loan. A similar path might suit McAidoo. But City need a winger now, and spending big money on one might not be necessary if McAidoo can prove himself in preseason.

What should City do?

McAidoo has only two senior appearances to his name. Jumping straight into a regular role for the FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders might be too big a step. But giving him an opportunity in preseason could provide the answer. If he produces, City might have the winger they need without spending a penny.

What do you think, Blues? Is McAidoo ready for the first team, or would a loan be the better move?
