Gusto on City's radar as Maresca era begins
Manchester City are reportedly interested in Chelsea defender Malo Gusto as Enzo Maresca prepares to take over at the Etihad.
According to Hooligan Soccer, the player's representatives have been in contact with City and AC Milan about a potential summer move.
Gusto is not a guaranteed starter at Stamford Bridge. When fit, Reece James is expected to get the nod at right-back for the Blues, which has led to speculation the Frenchman could move on.
City have been using Matheus Nunes at right-back, but the Portuguese midfielder is better suited to a central role. Gusto, who recorded eight goal contributions last season, would be a specialist addition in that position.
The potential transfer fee is around $75 million (£57m). City have the financial resources to meet that figure, though it remains to be seen whether an agreement can be reached with Chelsea.
Maresca already knows Gusto from their time together at Chelsea and may feel he can get the best out of the 22-year-old. The player has a contract with Chelsea until 2030, so City would need to meet the club's demands to get a deal done.
Given his limited starting opportunities, Chelsea are likely to be open to a sale. Gusto will want more regular football at this stage of his career, and a move to City — one of the biggest clubs in the world — under a manager he already knows could be an attractive option.
Whether anything materialises remains to be seen, but the early signs suggest Maresca may look to bring in a familiar face as he begins his City tenure.
