Manchester City have joined Arsenal and Chelsea in the race to sign Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers, with all three clubs now in direct contact with the player's representatives.
The 23-year-old has emerged as one of the standout performers in English football over the past 18 months, registering 14 goals and 12 assists in 50 appearances across all competitions as Villa claimed the UEFA Europa League title last season. His form earned him his first senior England call-ups.
Director of football Hugo Viana had identified Rogers as a profile of significant interest during squad planning, and what began as monitoring has now developed into something more concrete. According to journalist Graeme Bailey, all three clubs have presented their respective visions to the player's camp.
Villa holding firm on nine-figure fee
Aston Villa's demand for a fee exceeding £100 million has not deterred any of the interested parties. The Midlands club are insistent on eclipsing the £100 million they received from City for Jack Grealish in 2021, a figure shaped in part by Middlesbrough's entitlement to up to 20 percent of any future sale.
Rogers spent part of his youth career at the Etihad Stadium without making a senior appearance. Senior figures within City view the prospect of reacquiring a player they once helped develop as an opportunity with considerable merit ahead of Enzo Maresca's imminent appointment as manager.
Of the three clubs, Arsenal are understood to have made the strongest impression so far. Mikel Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta have played an active role in outlining the north Londoners' vision and how the attacker would fit in at the Emirates Stadium.
Chelsea's interest is notable for its history. Co-director of recruitment Joe Shields knows Rogers well, having been instrumental in taking him to City during his time as academy director at the Etihad, giving Stamford Bridge bosses a strong line of communication throughout the process.
Rogers' profile — direct running, technical creativity, the ability to operate across the left side or in a central attacking role — maps closely to the kind of wide forward Viana has consistently targeted this window. City are also actively looking to sign a new winger.
Villa's position as Europa League holders and newly-qualified Champions League participants gives Unai Emery genuine leverage. Rogers is not pushing for an exit, his contract runs until 2031, and Villa have every incentive to hold firm at a nine-figure valuation.
City's own financial commitments this summer are already considerable, with a club-record pursuit of Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson ongoing and further spend anticipated. Whether City ultimately push to the front of the queue, settle for a different attacking target, or find themselves outmanoeuvred by Arsenal's early momentum remains to be seen.
